Few processes can benefit your lawn as much as a core aeration. This process can not only save you money on your watering bills, it can also help you to get more out of your fertilization program. This process is only needed once a year and the benefits can be seen all year long. The benefits are not immediate but are steady throughout the entire growing season. This process can improve the long term appearance of your lawn without the use of any pesticides or fertilizers. How A Core Aeration Works And How It Can Benefit Your Lawn Scheduling an annual core aeration for your lawn provides countless benefits. A core aeration is the most beneficial way to aerate your lawn. Every year, people till the soil in their gardens so their plants and vegetables can easily root in and water can easily reach their roots. The same concept applies to your lawn; that’s where a yearly core aeration comes into play. Machines with hallow tines go across your lawn pulling cores of soil, thatch and grass roughly 1 inch in diameter and 2-4 inches long. core-aeration-example-modern-lawn-care In the above image, you can see if your lawn a thick thatch layer and compacted soil, it can be transformed into a lawn with ideal growing conditions with a core aeration. A thick thatch layer can function somewhat like a sponge. Any water has to get through it before it can get to the soil and be absorbed by your grass. Often times the thatch layer absorbs and holds a lot of water that was intended for your grass. During summer months this problems works two-fold against you, it prevents water from getting to the grass’s roots and it also makes the perfect breeding ground for turf damaging insects, fungus and disease. core-aeration-modern-lawn-careWhen the soil underneath the thatch is heavily compacted, the problems only worsen. Grass not only has a difficult time growing roots in compacted soil, but water is much more likely to run-off of heavily compacted soil instead of soaking into it. The combination of loosened soil and the actual holes from the cores helps your lawn to better absorb the water you put on it, often resulting in reduced watering costs. The loosened soil and actual cores also help your grass to more effectively absorb fertilizers.
